Co-Founder's Selections

Brian Monahan has worked in the digital media and marketing industry in the Bay Area for 20 years.  He is a co-founder of the NewCo Festivals.  Below are Brian’s recommendations for companies to visit at NewCo Silicon Valley.

Tuesday, October 21

10:00 am: eBay

Tuesday is titan day at NewCoSV.  The challenge will be finding a session with room, not picking a great company.  However, it would certainly be interesting to get eBay’s take on the recent Alibaba IPO.

1:00 pm: Google

The Google campus has taken on a mythical perception as the Wonka Chocolate Factory for brilliant nerds.  NewCo offers a golden ticket to go inside and check it out.

Wednesday, October 22

10:00 am: City of Palo Alto

This time slot has the industry disruptor Survey Monkey, a Bitcoin company in Xapo and HealthTap and Science Exchange who are applying digital techniques to broader industries.  I want to go hear from the City of Palo Alto.  In addition to promoting great companies doing amazing things, NewCo is also exploring how companies integrate with their communities.  Presumably the unofficial capital of Silicon Valley has a point of view on this topic.

12:00 pm: Mightybell

You simply cannot go wrong in this timeslot.  Gooru is reinventing how we teach, Cloudera how we build businesses, and Citi Ventures how we pay for things.  My choice is Mightybell because CEO Gina Bianchini has been doing amazing things in the industry since it began and I’m curious to learn more about how her latest foray to harness the power of social networks for smart professional networks.

2:00 pm: Medallia

My friend Rishad Tobacawalla is fond of saying “Data data everywhere, someone help me think!”  Companies’ interactions with their customers increasingly happen in digital environments.  This throws off reams of information but it also hard to find the signal through the noise.  Medallia is trying to help businesses understand what their customers really think.

4:00 pm: Houzz

This time slot lays to rest any thoughts that Silicon Valley is maturing and no longer cranking out true disruption.  Lot’s of great choices but I’m going with Houzz.  Appreciation for design seems to becoming ever more mainstream.  While it is nice to buy cool stuff, it stills feels hard to actually participate in the design process yourself.  Houzz offers a new platform to design your house.

Thursday, October 23

10:00 am: LinkedIn

The ultimate case study on a platform’d business model.

12:30 pm: Scanadu

Scanadu makes consumer hardware to measure important health data.  We all hope that wearables will unlock a revolution in health care diagnostics.  Scanadu is on the cutting edge of making that promise a reality.

It’s probably no surprise that NewCo Silicon Valley appears to be one of the most consistently excellent lineups we’ve ever had at a NewCo Festival.  If you’ve never really had the chance to get a hands on experience with the actual Silicon Valley, this is your chance!  Enjoy!
